If I have to be sent away I want to go to Nowhere House. Of course, since I am not a witch and don't live in Brittan so that will be an issue. The descriptions of characters and places will come alive as you read. And after reading the first couple of chapters you will want to escape to Nowhere House too.
For me, one of the keys to a good story is great characters. And if a writer can bring them to life, than you are on your way to a good story. Even better a group of misfits. And the group of characters in The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches certainly qualifies. But what a group of characters. Each one is so important to the story and add so much. And what else would you call a retired actor, two long suffering caretakers, a missing archaeologist, an internet witch, three young witch and a good looking but cranky librarian. Brought together by the need to keep three young witches secret and safe.
The escapades that they all engage in are fun. One review said this book was like a witchy hug and I have to agree. The world of Nowhere House is so believable, you might be trying to find it on a map. But then you will remember the wards on the house prevent that. Even the budding romance doesn't take away from the story like it can sometimes does. As each page goes by you care more about these characters. Learning about their backstories just adds another layer to the complexity of this story.
Ultimately this is a story of acceptance and belonging. The twist at the end is very unexpected. Only tradition dictates the rules Mika has to follow, and even though she doesn't like those rules and wishes things were different when the chips are down what she does goes against everything she was taught. Ian, Ken, Lucy, Jamie and the girls are the family she is offered. Can she accept them and hard will see fight for them?
